PSAT Test for Juniors
Oct 19 @ 8:10 am – 11:45 am

The PSAT, a scholarship-qualifying test for juniors, is being given at Chaska High School on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 starting promptly 8:10 a.m. in the back gym. The test will take all morning and students will return to their afternoon classes after taking the test and having lunch.

The PSAT test is designed for the following students:

  • Juniors who are going to take the SAT
  • Juniors who can qualify for National Merit recognition. In general, these students will have already scored in the 90th percentile on standardized tests such as the MAP and PLAN tests.
  • Juniors whose parents work for organizations that offer student scholarships and who also require a PSAT test score for scholarship consideration.
  • Other students should consult with their counselor before registering.

Please keep in mind that less than 1% of high school students score high enough to qualify for National Merit recognition. Only juniors can qualify for National Merit eligibility.

Students can pick up a PSAT Student Guide in the College/Career Resource Center.  The guide will answer many questions students and parents may have about the test. It will also provide practice questions.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION:
Starting date: Monday, September 19th at 8:00AM through Sunday, October 2nd at 11:59 PM.  Cost is $18.00.

Late Registration: Monday, October 3rd at 12:01 AM through Sunday, October 9th at 11:00 PM, based on availability of tests.   Cost is $28.00

Please register online at:  www.TotalRegistration.net/PSAT/240423

TEST DAY:
The PSAT will be administered on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 in the back gym of Chaska High School. The testing will begin at 8:10 AM and students will be released before lunch begins. When preparing to take any long test, students should make sure to get a good night‘s sleep before test day, followed by breakfast on test day. Students should bring a calculator and a #2 pencil (no mechanical pencils) to the testing session.

Are you still unsure if you child needs to take the PSAT?  Please keep reading.
The test is open to all students. However, the following information may help you and your high schooler make a more informed decision.

The PSAT has two main functions:
1.   It is practice for the SAT.
2.   It enters 11th grade students into the National Merit Scholarship competition.

Students should consider taking the PSAT if one of these two apply:
1.     If the student knows they‘re going to take the SAT. SAT and ACT are accepted by all colleges, however, there may be a few colleges that specifically request either the SAT or ACT. Please know if your prospective school requests one over the other.

2.     If the student is a junior AND has a chance at being a National Merit Semifinalist. About 0.5% of US students become a National Merit Semifinalist. There are strong correlations between MAP and PLAN scores with PSAT scores. Therefore, if a student has scored in the top few percentiles on MAP and PLAN the student will most likely score in the top 0.5% on the PSAT. If your high schooler is in this category, they‘re encouraged to take the PSAT.

Please contact Kayla Denner (dennerk@district112.org or 952-556-7122) if you have questions.
